Imagine
Now & Then

I was accepted as a wildcard in the Landscape Artist of the Year

competition in summer of 2023 and was expecting to have a view

of the Mersey river waterfront, as

Heat 1 did, but I was in Heat 2

that had the inner dock views. So I

chose this contrasting view of the

beautiful old Liver Building and the ultra-modern black glass and steel ofiice block.

Had to include a John Lennon looking down from the sky above. However 4 hours was not enough time to finish it so completed at home.

Birds Eye View

Started sketching pebbles on a beach near Lymington Hampshire. Then at home worked on a water colour version to include more rocks, cliffs and an atmosphere of isolation with a lonesome seagull enjoying the view.

Turneresque

This was an experiment in an ancient painting medium known as Egg Tempera as taught in an art class. Pigments are mixed with egg yolk to form a hard impasto raised surface. Turner would use similar paint mediums for his expressive colouring of turbulent and often violent storm scenes.

This was done in the style of Turner depicting a violent lightening storm silhouetting the Thames and Houses of Parliament.

The Old Hall, Hope

One of my favourite pubs. In the Derbyshire Hope Valley village Hope

Chinese Spring Mountainscape

I have taken an interest in Chinese art as a result of having a Chinese daughter-in-law and having twice visited China. Traditional Chinese art is mainly based on black ink drawings and images. Here I have tried to create a typical Chinese landscape with black ink. It is done on a 60cm x 40cm slab of marble. The black ink on white marble has created an interesting effect as the ink takes on a golden hue that changes as you look from different angles, and the natural grains in the marble add to the rugged mountain texture.

As with traditional Chinese art I have added just a hint of colour with the misty sun. Also the custom is to include a red triangular emblem as a title. This one is the Mandarin script for Spring.

Started as a winter hill walk scene that I turned it into a blizzard.

Canal path scene

On the same style as Chinese art this monochrome scene has just a hint of colour with a hazy sun.

Moclin Spain

Moclin is a village in Spain in the district of Granada. It is set in the stunningly beautiful hills behind Granada. In September 2023 I attended an abstract acrylic landscapes course, and here are some of my paintings from the course.

Moclin magic

When the sun was setting on Moclin castle, which was set on a craggy hill, it threw up a vivid pink and purple hue. So I've tried to capture it here.

Moclin magic abstracted

This is a more abstracted version which is what the tutor Jo Hathaway wanted really.
